Exile in her luggage. The life of graphic artist Lea Grundig

Graphic artist Lea Grundig led a life marked by exile, art and political conviction. As a Jew and a communist, she was expelled by the Nazis and began translating reports about the Holocaust into haunting images at an early age, while also shaping the visual culture of Palestine and the GDR. In her biography, historian Jeannette van Laak paints a portrait of a controversial, headstrong and sensitive artist, also exploring the relationship between Lea and her husband Hans Grundig.

Book presentation

Käthe Kollwitz. The Berlin Museum and its collection

Not every artist has a museum dedicated to them – Käthe Kollwitz is an exception. To mark the 40th anniversary of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Berlin, the institution is presenting not only its collection, but also new insights into the artist’s life, work and environment. The current publication presents highlights from the museum’s holdings, sheds light on her family and friendships, her literary interests and her social engagement – a fascinating look at an artist whose work continues to move us to this day.

The book launch is taking place as part of World Book Day and also marks the opening of the new display case on the first floor, which presents a selection of small-scale exhibits on various aspects of Käthe Kollwitz. The space also serves as a tribute to the museum’s founder, Hans Pels Leusden.

Participation is free of charge.
