The “Kollwitz 2.0” autumn holiday course focused on the fusion of virtual and real worlds. Based on the impressive drawings of the artist Käthe Kollwitz, eight young people intensively explored her works. They developed their own motifs for selected works of art, which they realised using analogue techniques such as drawing, photography and stop-motion.

With the help of augmented reality, these works were linked to the originals so that the designed elements appear as digital overlays in the exhibition.

At the intersection of art, history and politics, pupils explore the close connection between locality, time and artistic output in the life of the artist Käthe Kollwitz, who lived at present-day Kollwitzplatz from 1891 to 1943. Public space is understood in this context as an analogue and tactile learning environment within a historical framework that can be artistically engaged with.

The two artworks created between the wars serve as the thematic framework: ‘Never Again War’ and ‘Seeds Shall Not Be Ground’, which Käthe Kollwitz described as her testament and through which the connection between her personal fate and contemporary history can be traced directly on site.

The pupils visit three stations in the urban space that are linked both thematically and geographically: they use historical maps, research inscriptions and information panels, and capture key design principles through drawing and sketching.

The programme is rounded off with a DIY workshop in the Museum Pankow, which bridges the gap to the present day: Using design examples from around the world, participants reflect on art as a form of protest.

Using the technique of stencil printing, pupils actively develop their own logos and text messages and print fanzines or posters. The aim is to explore a possible path to involvement and participation in democratic processes and to strengthen the self-efficacy of the participants, because: Every opinion counts!

Exhibition talks for older people

Following the great success of previous years, the Kollwitz Museum is once again hosting special exhibition talks. Under the theme ‘Turning Points in Käthe Kollwitz’s Life’, we are creating a space for discussion, reminiscence and new perspectives on the work of this significant artist on three selected Saturday afternoons.

In a relaxed atmosphere over coffee and homemade cake, we will explore the defining turning points in the life and work of Käthe Kollwitz. Her art addresses both personal and social changes – themes that still resonate today and inspire dialogue.

The 90-minute discussions offer a sensitive and lively insight into her work as a graphic artist, draughtswoman and sculptor. Following our discussion, we will visit the exhibition and engage in conversation about the selected artworks.

We look forward to spending these special afternoons with you.

22 April marks the 81st anniversary of the death of Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) – one of the most significant graphic artists and sculptors of the 20th century. We commemorate an artist whose view of the world was characterised by deep empathy and social awareness. Yet Käthe Kollwitz’s life and times cannot be fully understood through drawings and prints alone. The cinema of the 1920s and early 1930s also tells of the upheavals, hopes and tensions that surrounded her.

As part of the current special exhibition, the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin, in collaboration with the Deutsche Kinemathek and the Bundesplatz-Kino, invites you to a special cinematic weekend: Under the title “Käthe Kollwitz Goes to the Cinema”, four films that Käthe Kollwitz is known to have known and appreciated will be screened at the Bundesplatz-Kino on 25 and 26 April 2026.

The programme forms part of the current special exhibition “Käthe Kollwitz and the Theatre” and offers a new perspective on the artist: as an attentive witness to her times, including the early days of cinema.

The world-famous graphic artist and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz was fascinated by the then-new medium of film and is known to have attended cinema screenings. In 1934, in her response to a survey of prominent figures conducted by the journalist Carl Seelig on behalf of the *Neue Zürcher Zeitung*, she named six films that she particularly admired.

The Bundesplatz Cinema is presenting four of these works. Two of them also bear a special personal connection: they feature Maria Matray, a niece of Käthe Kollwitz. Thus, the films not only provide a historical context but also reveal a surprisingly immediate closeness – between artistic creation, family ties and the moving images of an era that also shaped Kollwitz.

We invite you to rediscover these connections: in the exhibition, in the film programme and through mindful viewing.

Each screening will be preceded by a short introduction by Dr Annette Seeler, guest curator of the special exhibition at the Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Berlin.

“RAINER WÖLZL – CONSTELLATIONS”
6 June to 9 August 2026
Opening: Friday, 5 June 2026, 7 pm

The Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Berlin is presenting “Constellations,” a comprehensive solo exhibition by Austrian artist Rainer Wölzl. The exhibition offers a compelling insight into the multifaceted work of an artist who has been grappling with the cultural, social, and political upheavals of our time for decades.

Rainer Wölzl, born in Vienna in 1954, works primarily with charcoal drawing today. His mostly large-format works are based on art-historical and media-based visual sources. He takes up motifs with contemporary historical and current sociopolitical relevance and, through montage, transforms them into complex visual constellations in which past and present converge.

The exhibition brings together works from a long-term project developed under the broader concept of a “Museum of Shadows.” The notion of the shadow functions here as both a poetic and political space for reflection—as a trace of the past, a surface for projection, and a component of both individual and collective memory.

At the heart of Wölzl’s work lies a continuous reflection on power structures, oppression, and their various manifestations in different social contexts. His artistic practice is conceived as a strategy of appropriation and transformation: visual material is not merely cited, but recomposed, shifted, and transferred into an open space of meaning.

Characteristic of Wölzl’s works is their multi-part nature as well as a grid-like structure that creates distance while simultaneously allowing for precise socio-political reflection. In deliberate contrast to the visual overload of digital imagery, the works stand as a testament against historical amnesia and for the enduring power of the drawn image.

The exhibition is the artist’s second museum presentation in Berlin, following his 2002 showing at the Georg Kolbe Museum, where he presented the extensive series “Aesthetics of Resistance” on Peter Weiss.

Special exhibition from 21 February to 3 May 2026

The Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin is opening a new perspective on the life and work of one of Germany’s most important artists in the former Theater building of Charlottenburg Palace. The special exhibition ‘Käthe Kollwitz and Theater’ focuses on a topic that has received little attention to date – Käthe Kollwitz and her family’s affinity for the theater.

Theater as part of everyday family life
Diary entries and letters to her son Hans document how visiting the theatre was a natural part of everyday family life – just like political discussions and artistic work. Käthe Kollwitz and her family experienced the most fruitful period in Berlin’s theater history at first hand and attended numerous innovative productions by the great directors of their time, including Otto Brahm, Max Reinhardt and Leopold Jessner. From the naturalism of the late 19th century to the expressionist theater of the 1920s, they followed the stage closely. Dance, concerts, film and cabaret were also part of this rich cultural cosmos.

Theater as a resonance chamber for artistic work
The exhibition examines the influence these intense visual experiences had on Käthe Kollwitz’s artistic work. Although she did not work directly for the theater, her oeuvre reflects a wide range of references to literary material, scenic situations and dramatic condensations. Theater is thus visible less as a concrete motif than as an intellectual resonance chamber for her work.

Highlights of the exhibition
A large number of loans from public and private collections, newly catalogued and digitised archive material, and interdisciplinary perspectives clearly show how closely the life of the Kollwitz family was interwoven with one of the most productive phases in Berlin’s theater history. In addition to works by Käthe Kollwitz, works by Ernst Barlach, Lovis Corinth, Georg Kolbe, August Macke, Max Liebermann, Ernst Oppler and Emil Orlik are also on display.

Extensive loans and research work
The exhibition comprises over 100 exhibits from 17 lenders, including the Alte Nationalgalerie SMB, Kupferstichkabinett SMB, Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, Ernst Barlach Haus Hamburg, John Neumeier Stiftung Hamburg, Kollwitz Museum Cologne, and Tanzarchiv und Theaterwissenschaftliche Sammlung Cologne. It concludes three years of research by Kollwitz specialist Annette Seeler, which was carried out in collaboration with the museum.
