\nAn encounter with art, history, architecture and Charlottenburg\u2019s \u201cRed Island\u201d<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1760048166742{margin-right: 50px !important;padding-right: 50px !important;}”]Walking from Sophie-Charlotte-Platz along Schlo\u00dfstra\u00dfe to Charlottenburg Palace, which Electress Sophie-Charlotte had built as a retreat, it is difficult to imagine that this area was once covered by the meadows and fields of the village of Lietzow. The rural character only changed in the mid-19th century, when industrialisation made it necessary to create housing for a rapidly growing working class in Charlottenburg.<\/p>\n

The neighbourhood around Friedrich-Karl-Platz, today’s Klausenerplatz, was created. All the streets in the neighbourhood were lined with tenement buildings, whose backyards often housed craft workshops, haulage companies, cowsheds or actual factories. The traditional Engelhardt brewery brewed its \u2018Charlottenburger Pilsener\u2019 in Danckelmannstra\u00dfe until 1983, and there was a sausage factory in Knobelsdorffstra\u00dfe.
\nIn the block between Sophie-Charlotte-Stra\u00dfe, Schlo\u00dfstra\u00dfe, Knobelsdorffstra\u00dfe and Spandauer Damm, 30,000 people soon lived in cramped conditions, some of which were unacceptable.<\/p>\n

The neighbourhood became a stronghold of the SPD and KPD, and thus part of \u2018red Berlin\u2019. In the early 1930s, there were repeated street fights between socialists, communists and the storm troopers of the NSDAP, who carried out raids on \u2018little Wedding\u2019 \u2013 as the neighbourhood was also known.
\nIn the 1970s and 1980s, resistance arose when tenants fought to keep their flats and against the wholesale redevelopment of their neighbourhood. They received support from architect Hardt-Waltherr H\u00e4mer, who proved in an expert report that renovating and modernising old buildings is much cheaper than demolition and new construction. His concept of \u2018careful urban renewal\u2019 was successfully implemented and paved the way for further construction projects in Berlin.<\/p>\n

Right now, the people in the neighbourhood are burning with one question: what will happen to St. Kamillus Church on Klausenerplatz? The daycare centre and retirement home in the building have already closed, and the church will close on 31 December 2025. K\u00e4the Kollwitz hat nicht nur Bilder gezeichnet, sondern auch Druckgraphiken hergestellt – zum Beispiel f\u00fcr Flugbl\u00e4tter und Plakate, wie ihr ber\u00fchmtes Plakat “Nie wieder Krieg!”.<\/p>\n

Im Workshop gibt es n\u00e4heres \u00fcber k\u00fcnstlerische Drucktechniken zu erfahren, Bildbeispiele von K\u00e4the Kollwitz in der Ausstellung zu sehen und die gro\u00dfe Ausdruckskraft dieser Bildsprache kennenzulernen. Anschlie\u00dfend k\u00f6nnen eigene Werke mit einem \u00e4hnlichen Verfahren gestaltet und sich dabei so richtig ausgedruckt werden!<\/p>\n

Der Workshop wird in Kooperation mit Jugend Im Museum<\/em>\u00a0e.V. angeboten.<\/p>\n
