Showcase

“Lithography – printing with the lithographic press”

Experience the oldest flat printing process live in the museum

Of the 275 printed works created by Käthe Kollwitz, almost half are lithographs. Especially in the second half of her life, she used this technique to achieve a broad impact with large print runs, posters, and leaflets.

In the 1970s, Dietmar Liebsch, a master stone and offset printer from Berlin, discovered the 1866 printing press and two lithograph stones by Käthe Kollwitz: Bread! from 1924 and Mother with Boy from 1933, in basement rooms of the Arnoldi flatbed printing company in Berlin. He was able to acquire the printing press together with the two litho stones, restore them and make them printable again.

In 2016, the Association of Friends of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin acquired the lithographic printing press for the museum’s collection. Visitors will be shown the artistic technique of lithography and printing in a showcase demonstration.

Workshop

“Drawing in the Museum”

Käthe Kollwitz was a masterful graphic artist. She created insightful drawings through delicate lines — reflections of the soul on paper.

With instruction, various aspects of drawing, such as contour, hatching, and light and shadow, are discovered in her artworks. How can emotions be expressed in drawing? How do tonal transitions and the relationship of dark to light tones make an image appear more dramatic? Answers to such questions are sought through drawing.

Be inspired to draw through the works of Käthe Kollwitz! Beginners and advanced students are equally welcome.
